Moving Forward After Spinal Cord Injury
Finding New Strength
Josh was in the ocean when a powerful wave slammed him headfirst into the sand, leaving him paralyzed. The toughest part of his new reality was not the accident itself but the sudden loss of independence.
Adapting meant finding ways to stay strong, engaged, and hopeful. Instead of giving in to discouragement, Josh began searching for tools that could help him remain active and rebuild his sense of control. That search eventually led him to Restorative Therapies and the RT300 Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) therapy system.
A First in the Nation
Josh became the very first person in the United States to purchase the RT300. From the beginning, he saw its potential.
“Since then, I’ve ridden thousands and thousands of sessions. It’s just an amazing feeling to be able to move again.”
Each ride restored not only his physical strength but also his confidence. “I get a really good cardiovascular workout, and my muscles are built up—where usually, for a quadriplegic, they’re expected to be extra skinny. But I’ve got extra muscle.”
For Josh, seeing his body respond in this way proved that recovery doesn’t stop with an injury—it evolves with the right tools.
Rediscovering Movement
For Josh, the impact of the RT300 goes beyond physical benefits. “There’s something really cool about looking down and seeing your body, seeing your legs doing something that they haven’t done for 21 years, and that maybe you didn’t think they were ever going to do again. There’s something really profound about that.”
Those moments remind Josh that progress is possible, even decades after an injury. The RT300 continues to help him reconnect with his body, providing opportunities he once thought were no longer within reach.

New Possibilities
Josh has always been someone who thrives on new challenges. The RT300 opened the door to fresh opportunities.
“I’m always excited to find something that I haven’t been able to try. FES brought about this new possibility of like, ‘I can do this and I can thrive in my life.’”
Thousands of sessions later, Josh continues to find motivation in every ride. Each use of the RT300 brings both physical progress and a renewed sense of hope.
A Game Changer at Home
The RT300 has played a central role in keeping Josh strong, healthy, and engaged in his recovery. Beyond maintaining circulation and muscle tone, it has helped him gain his independence back.
“Having some type of technology that helps me be as active as possible—it’s a game changer.”
When Josh got the RT300 at home, it gave him even more control over his life. “You can bring exercises home, exercises based on your schedule, and your time. And you’re not always having to travel and be on the road. So bringing it home allowed me to truly get on with my life. And to pursue my education, to pursue my aspirations of employment and to start a family.”
This independence allowed Josh to live life on his terms. Balancing his rehabilitation with work, advocacy, and family life has given him a renewed sense of purpose.
Life Today
Today, Josh continues to use the RT300 regularly, staying committed to his health while also investing in his passions. His consistency has allowed him to maintain muscle, improve endurance, and stay mentally engaged. Just as importantly, it has reinforced his belief that progress is always possible.
He describes the RT300 as both a tool for recovery and a reminder of resilience. With every ride, Josh proves that life after injury can still hold movement, strength, and opportunity.
Moving Forward
Josh’s journey is a powerful reminder that recovery is not defined by limits but by persistence and possibility. With the right technology and determination, he has rediscovered strength, confidence, and independence.
