Resources for Spinal Cord Injury Community

You are not alone. There are many ways to build and shape your community as you learn to advocate for yourself after a spinal cord injury. One of the best ways to do this is by connecting to the greater spinal cord injury community of fellow advocates, and you don’t have to live geographically near a big city, or any city for that matter, to make this happen. There are dozens of options for connecting with others with paralysis. See the options available below.

In-Person Community and Support Groups

For many people as convenient as online support groups are, nothing can beat meeting with people in-person. There still are several options available for those who prefer this method of community building after a spinal cord injury. From rehab hospitals to non-profit meet-ups, here is a list of some of the best in-person community and support groups for people with spinal cord injuries.

National SCI Organizations

Why Connect? As the years progress after your spinal cord injury, you may want to get involved with the larger national spinal cord injury organizations and other disability related organizations around the country. There are several out there and they are all doing amazing things to help the disability community. This is something we hope to educate people on as we strive to be your advocate for life.

The Importance of Peer Mentoring

True, it may seem like no one understands what you're going through after a spinal cord injury… that is unless they have gone through it too! Peer mentors are living proof of what is possible. They are part-guide, part-friend, and they can become an integral part of your growth after a spinal cord injury. Many people with paralysis say their lives would not be where they are today if it wasn't for a peer mentor that showed up and challenged their perspective.
