How iFES Therapy Works
and Health Benefits

Improving Outcomes

Functional electrical stimulation, or FES is a well-established modality that’s been widely used for rehabilitation for over 50 years. FES uses safe, low-current electrical pulses to activate paralyzed or deconditioned muscles for functional movement and is a proven therapy with a wide range of therapeutic indications.

Restorative Therapies' systems combine therapeutic modalities to create complex integrated functional electrical stimulation (iFES).  iFES incorporates functional electrical stimulation (FES) integrated with task specific or motor assistance/resistance activities to optimize therapeutic goals. Our proprietary software provides real-time biofeedback, data tracking and sophisticated control algorithms that are designed for a wide range of neurological impairments.

How it Works

iFES creates patterned movement in your arms, legs, and core. Electrical impulses are delivered through electrodes on your skin to stimulate your lower peripheral nerves which evoke a muscle contraction.

With a Restorative Therapies iFES system, you can stimulate over 40 muscle groups on one or both sides of your body depending on your unique needs. Using a Restorative Therapies iFES system provides you with a safe and effective way for your weak or paralyzed muscles to undergo progressive resistive exercise (PRE) in order to experience a number of therapeutic and positive health outcomes.

Health Benefits of iFES

Restorative Therapies systems have been cleared by the FDA to:

  • Reduce muscle atrophy
  • Reduce muscle spasms
  • Improve local circulation
  • Maintain or increase range of motion
  • Facilitate muscle re-education

Regular use can also help you prevent re-hospitalization, improve your quality of life, and avoid secondary complications such as pressure sores and pneumonia.
