Background

Staff PictureRTI was founded in response to the pioneering research of Dr. John McDonald.  His basic science research suggests that repetitive neural activity stimulates cell growth in the central nervous system. This activity based therapy1 is known as Restorative TherapyTM

Increasing activity levels can help to improve overall health, cardiovascular fitness and blood circulation, range of motion, and flexibility. Activity can also raise energy levels, help reduce spasticity, decrease muscle atrophy, and assist with the performance of activities of daily living.

  • Nervous system damage from diseases or injuries such as Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Palsy or Leukodystrophy often reduce neural and physical activity beneath the level of the injury.  Over time, this loss impairs patients’ general health and self-esteem, which undermines their attempts to improve their situation, decreases their quality of life, and increases the demands on medical and social services.

  • Treatments have focused on stabilizing individuals and helping them adapt to their impairment. However, scientists recently discovered that physical, neurological and functional improvements can occur even long after the nervous system is damaged2.

Restorative Therapies is working to shift the focus from hospital-based treatment of acute injury to pragmatic long term therapy programs designed to promote ongoing physical and functional improvements and well being.

Restorative Therapy uses a combination of functional electrical stimulation (FES) and motor-assisted activity to enable patients to undertake clinic, home or gym therapy sessions regularly and thereby increase physical and neural activity in injured regions of the body.
